Clutch free play refers to the free / smooth movement of the clutch pedal before the linkage acts and the release bearing comes up against the lever. It is necessary as insufficient free play may lead to the release bearing to constantly ride against the thrust ring of the pressure plate. Bearings and levers might wear out faster than usual if free play is insufficient.
