Maruti Suzuki may experience a slowdown in the sales of its compact cars, but that hasn’t hindered its position as the leader in terms of sales volume, with the Wagon R taking the lead.
From April 2023 to February 2024, Maruti Suzuki sold 1.83 lakh units of the Wagon R. While this figure is slightly lower than the previous financial year’s sales of over 1.95 lakh units during the same period, it still remains the top-selling model for Maruti. Notably, anticipation surrounds the arrival of the next-generation Wagon R by 2026, with the possibility of an electric variant, as hinted by the eWX concept showcased at the 2023 Japanese Mobility Show.
Following closely behind is the second-generation Baleno, with sales reaching 1.80 lakh units from April 2023 to February 2024. This marks a slight dip from the previous financial year’s sales of 1.83 lakh units during the same period. The introduction of a new-generation Baleno during that time period contributed to the increased sales figures. Subsequently, this led to the launch of the second-generation Toyota Glanza and, last year, the Maruti Fronx. The cycle will complete in the next financial year with the launch of Toyota’s version, named the Urban Cruiser Taisor.
Rounding off the list is the iconic Maruti Swift hatchback, which recorded sales of 1.79 lakh units in FY24 compared to 1.59 lakh units in the previous financial year. The hatchback has consistently been offered with discounts for over a year, driving increased sales. Anticipation surrounds the introduction of a new-generation Swift in India in the upcoming financial year, which will also lead to the launch of a next-generation Dzire compact sedan.
With only 23 days remaining in the current month, it appears unlikely that the Wagon R or the other two models will lose their positions on the podium for this financial year.
