Detonation is the tendency of a fuel to pre-ignite or auto-ignite before spark plug firing. It is is the spontaneous combustion of air-fuel mixture not utilized completely in the previous cycle of the engine. It is caused by fuel with a low octane rating. This results in shock waves in the combustion. The resulting sound of is known as ‘detonation’.
